Emma Watson – If you’re currently single and dreading your family’s holiday-time inquisition, feel free to take a page from Emma Watson’s book and let them know you’re actually “self-partnered.”

Watson, who rose to fame as Hermione in the Harry Potter movies and now portrays eldest March sister Meg in the upcoming Little Women adaptation, shares her thoughts in a new British Vogue cover story. The actress admits she didn’t view being single as such a great thing—but she’s had a lot of revelations this year.

“I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” Watson said. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.'”

Turns out she just needed a little perspective shift: To paraphrase Jerry McGuire, Emma completes Emma. “It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”

In a conversation with English journalist and activist Paris Lees, Watson also opened up about having a “tough” 2019, in large part because she’s feeling the weight of social expectations as she inches toward her 30th birthday in April 2020.

“I was like, ‘Why does everyone make such a big fuss about turning 30? This is not a big deal,’” Watson says. “Cut to 29, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I feel so stressed and anxious. And I realize, it’s because there is suddenly this bloody influx of subliminal messaging around.”

“If you have not built home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out… There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety,” she continues.

Though Watson was linked to her former Harry Potter co-star Tom Felton (a.k.a Draco Malfoy) earlier this year, she was snapped sharing a kiss with a mystery man back in October. But as a general rule, Watson likes to keep her love life under wraps. Referring to a previous relationship, Watson told Vanity Fair in 2017, “I want to be consistent: I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways.”

“I would hate anyone that I was with to feel like they were in any way part of a show or an act,” she added.
