Wetherspoon to hire 10,000 staff with plans to build new pubs and hotels
Wetherspoon will create up to 10,000 new jobs as it invests more than £200million in pubs and hotels over the next four years.
It is to build 60 new pubs and ‘a few’ new hotels, while a further 80 existing pubs across the UK and Republic of Ireland will be doubled or tripled in size.
Most of the investment will be channelled into developments in small and medium-sized towns.
The chain currently runs 875 pubs and 58 hotels across the UK and Republic of Ireland and employs 44,000 staff.
There will also be new pubs opening in Felixstowe, Suffolk, Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire and in Prestatyn, North Wales.
There will also be investment in major cities including London, Birmingham and Leeds.
The company founder and chairman Tim Martin said: ‘We are looking forward to opening many more new pubs as well as investing in existing pubs over the next four years.
‘We are especially pleased that a large proportion of the investment will be in smaller towns and cities which have seen a decline in investment in recent years.’
Martin fought off a shareholder revolt after advisory firms questioned his position in the run-up to the annual general meeting last month.
He has also been accused of breaking company law over £96,000 spent on pro-Brexit campaign materials ahead of the EU referendum.
Shareholders passed the annual report, a tacit vote of confidence in the way the expenditure was handled.
JD Wetherspoon reported increased profits before tax of £95.4million on £1.8billion of revenues in the year ended July 2019.
The 10,000 jobs figure is based on an average of 60 to 70 workers being taken on at each new pub and redevelopment.
