Coronavirus UK – SECONDARY schools in the UK could now stay closed until January 2021 wreaking havoc for A-Level and GCSE students.
But the PM has reportedly told ministers he wants lockdown over as quickly as possible to help get the economy back on track.
Business Secretary Alok Sharma is said to have warned that a failure to reopen the hospitality sector could cost up to 3.5 million jobs.
The Sunday Times reports on hearing the news the PM reportedly replied: “Christ!”
Boris is now said to have tasked a small group of ministers – called the ‘Save Summer Six’ – to draw up measures to return life to something like normal by July.
It comes amid news secondary schools may not fully be able to reopen until next year – with exam regulator Ofqual making contingency plans to push 2021’s exams from May to as late as July.
Plans are also in place to continue with this summer’s emergency markng system, according to the Sunday Times.
Teaching unions confirmed Government guidance to secondary schools on social distancing will mean thousands of pupils could return part-time, meaning a full return to the classroom could be as late as January.
Meanwhile, the UK’s death toll stands at 40,465.

Pope Francis has warned Italians to remain cautious against coronavirus as infection rates fall.
The pontiff urged the country to obey government lockdown rules, continue social distancing and wearing masks.
Pope Francis said: “Follow the rules, they are rules that help us to avoid the virus getting ahead.”
Italy’s gradual easing of lockdown rules allowed several hundreds to gather in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday for the pope’s noon blessing.
While Francis was clearly thrilled to see the faithful followers gathered, he stressed they must remain careful.
He told the crowds: “Be careful. Don’t cry victory too soon.”
Italy has reported 53 more coronavirus related deaths, taking the total to 33,899 – the fourth highest in the world after the US, the UK and Brazil.
The country also recorded 197 new Covid-19 cases, a total of 234,998.
Free face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer were being given out to the thousands of George Floyd protesters outside of the US Embassy in London today.
