Meghan and Harry interview: Palace taking race issues ‘very seriously’

Meghan – The race issues raised by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their interview with Oprah Winfrey are “concerning” and “taken very seriously”, Buckingham Palace has said.

In a statement, the Palace said “recollections may vary” but the matters will be addressed privately.

Meghan – The race issues raised by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in their interview with Oprah Winfrey are “concerning” and “taken very

Meghan told Oprah Harry had been asked by an unnamed family member “how dark” their son Archie’s skin might be.

The Palace said the Sussexes would “always be much loved family members”.

The response from Buckingham Palace came after crisis meetings involving senior royals.

The Palace had been under growing pressure to respond to the interview in which Meghan – the first mixed-race member of the modern Royal Family – said that questions had been asked about their son’s skin colour.

Prince Harry later clarified to Oprah that the comments were not made by either the Queen or the Duke of Edinburgh.

In other developments, Piers Morgan has left ITV’s Good Morning Britain show following a row over comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex.

The statement from the Palace, which came a day and a half after the interview was first broadcast in the US, said: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

It is understood the royals wanted to carefully consider their response and to give the British public an opportunity to watch the interview first when it was broadcast on Monday evening.

The royals are said to consider this a family matter and to believe they should be given the opportunity to discuss the issues privately.

Although likely, it was never absolutely certain that the Queen would issue a statement following the interview given by her grandson and his wife.

The risk was that any response would add to the “Royals in crisis” narrative which is playing out across front pages and TV screens across the globe.

But having had time to discuss the claims made by Harry and Meghan, four short sentences convey the message from the Palace that this is a private family matter and the specific allegations will not be publicly addressed.

The tone is conciliatory, with reference to the Sussexes as much loved family members. There is a gentle challenge in the line “whilst some recollections may vary”, but also an assurance that concerns will be taken seriously.

And we can be sure that – at least as far as the UK-based royals are concerned – any bridge-building will be done in private.

Piers Morgan leaves ITV’s GMB after row over Meghan remarks

Piers Morgan has left ITV’s Good Morning Britain following a row over comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex.

It brings the controversial host’s time on the show to an end after six years.

ITV announced the decision after Ofcom said it was investigating his comments after receiving 41,000 complaints.

On Monday’s show, Morgan said he “didn’t believe a word” the duchess had told Oprah Winfrey about her mental health in an interview.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

The channel confirmed to the BBC that his departure from the breakfast news show will take effect immediately but declined to say who would be replacing him on Wednesday.

In a tweet on Wednesday morning Morgan said that he had reflected on his opinion on the Oprah interview and still did not believe Meghan, adding that “freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on”.

“Thanks for all the love, and hate. I’m off to spend more time with my opinions,” he said.

Morgan’s departure followed an on-air clash with weather presenter Alex Beresford, who criticised his colleague on Tuesday for “continuing to trash” the duchess, prompting Morgan to walk off set. He returned within 10 minutes.

Also on Tuesday, ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said she “completely believed what [the duchess] says”, adding that ITV is “totally committed to” mental health.

Mental health charity Mind, which is a partner with ITV on its Britain Get Talking campaign, also criticised Morgan, saying it was “disappointed” by the presenter’s comments.

What did Piers Morgan say?

On Monday’s programme, Morgan picked up on the duchess’s claim that her request to senior Buckingham Palace officials for help was rejected, after she told Oprah she had had suicidal thoughts.

“Who did you go to?” he said. “What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said, Meghan Markle. I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.

“The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our Royal Family I think is contemptible.”

He also referred to the duchess as the “Pinocchio Princess” in a tweet later that morning.

Following an outcry, he said on Tuesday’s episode that “I still have serious concerns about the veracity of a lot of what” Meghan said, but that it was “not for me to question if she felt suicidal”.

He added: “My real concern was a disbelief frankly… that she went to a senior member of the Royal household and told them she was suicidal and was told she could not have any help because it would be a bad look for the family.”

Meghan Markle – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex broke the news to their team in person in January following the announcement that they were stepping down as senior working royals.

While one or two may be absorbed back into the royal household, most are now negotiating redundancy packages.

Last night Buckingham Palace said it did not comment on staffing matters but it is understood senior royals, including the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William are aware of the office closure and redundancies.

A source told the Mail: ‘Given their decision to step back, an office at Buckingham Palace is no longer needed. While the details are still being finalised and efforts are being made to redeploy people within the royal household, unfortunately, there will be some redundancies.’

Among those to lose their jobs are the couple’s newly appointed private secretary, Fiona Mcilwham – although she is on secondment from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and is likely to be found in a role in Whitehall – and their hugely experienced communications chief Sara Latham.

Harry’s long-standing programme co-ordinator Clara Loughran, who was so well regarded by the prince that she was asked to hand Meghan Markle her bouquet in church on her wedding day, will go.

As well as Miss Latham – who previously worked for the Obamas and was Hillary Clinton’s senior campaign adviser – her deputy, assistant communications secretary Marnie Gaffney, is leaving.

A much-loved and long-serving member of Buckingham Palace press staff, she played a major role in supporting Harry on his military work and organised his and Meghan’s hugely successful official tours to Australia and Africa.

Friends said today Ms Gaffney was offered another role at Buckingham Palace, but had decided to accept the redundancy package offered.

A source said: ‘She had the option to go back to the Palace, and they wanted her to stay.

‘But she decided it was a natural ending after a decade with the royal household.

‘She will receive her settlement and is looking forward to taking on some new and different challenges’

The Queen made her a member of the Royal Victorian Order because of her devoted service.

The other press officer to lose her job is Julie Burley, who worked for Harry, William and Kate on their successful mental health campaign Heads Together.

The assistant communications secretary was headed-hunted by Harry and Meghan and led the press team on his Invictus Games. She has also managed the media side of many of the couple’s domestic engagements and patronages.

David Watkins, poached from fashion house Burberry in August as the couple’s social media expert, is also out.

The source insisted that while ‘Megxit’ had come as a complete shock to the team, most accept their fate. ‘The Duke and Duchess have a small team, less than 15 people. The team are very loyal to the Sussexes and understand and respect the decision they have taken,’ the source said.

‘They are all close and supporting each other. The team are busy helping to set their Royal Highnesses up for the future and working on a series of final engagements.’

It is understood that this includes the Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall on March 7, which will be Harry’s last engagement as Captain-General of the Royal Marines. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are also expected to attend the Commonwealth Day service on March 9.

Prince Harry – Frogmore Cottage, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is in the process of being shuttered, according to reports, fuelling speculation the couple do not intend to spend any meaningful time in the UK in the near future.

Key live-in staff – a house manager and a cleaner – are being moved to other duties within the Queen’s household. Other staff members, used on an ad hoc basis and including chefs, maids and footmen, have been told their services are no longer required at the couple’s Windsor residence, the Daily Mail reported.

The claim comes as Harry and Meghan begin a period of “transition”, splitting their time between the UK and Canada, with the reluctant blessing of the Queen.

Meghan is already in Canada, with the couple’s son, Archie, and their two dogs, having flown back to the Vancouver Island hideaway where the couple spent six weeks on a break from royal duties over the Christmas period.

Harry is understood to have private engagements in the UK early next week, with speculation he will then join Meghan and Archie.

Senior royal officials are still in the process of thrashing out details of a plan to allow the couple to carve out new roles. The Sussexes want to “step back” from frontline royal duties, be able to earn an income and become financially independent of the taxpayer.

A source said: “No members of staff have been let go. In quiet periods, staff are often redeployed elsewhere around the estate.”

When they made their announcement last week, the Sussexes indicated on their new website that they intended to use Frogmore Cottage, gifted by the Queen and refurbished at a cost of £2.4m to the public purse, as their official residence while in the UK “so that their family will always have a place to call home in the United Kingdom”.

The Grade II-listed building was converted from five quarters back to a single residence for the couple and their baby son.

Meghan Markle is wasting no time embarking on her and Prince Harry’s independent career path amid their exit as senior members of the royal family.

The Duchess of Sussex already inked a deal with Disney before she and Prince Harry shocked the world with their “Megxit” announcement this week, according to a new report.

U.K.’s The Times claims the duchess recorded a voiceover for a Disney project before she and Prince Harry left for a six-week-long sabbatical ahead of the Christmas holiday.

The outlet claims Markle did the voiceover in return for a donation to Elephants Without Borders, a non-profit organization in Botswana that aims to protect the species from poaching.

News of the deal comes months after Meghan Markle attended the U.K. premiere of “The Lion King” in London. The Duchess’ attendance at the red carpet event made headlines after she was spotted speaking to Pharrell about the lack of privacy that comes along with being a royal.

As Pharrell complimented Meghan and Harry’s marriage, the Duchess of Sussex responded, “Oh, thank you. They don’t make it easy.”

As a part of their big announcement on Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan updated their official Sussexroyal.com website with answers to burning questions about how the couple’s finances would be impacted by reduced royal roles.

The couple explained that in the current structure, they do not earn “any income in any form,” but value the “ability to earn a professional income.”

Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly called a private meeting with Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry to discuss the recent royal drama that has unfolded in the press.

Buckingham Palace made headlines this week when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they would be stepping down as “senior members” of the British royal family and splitting their time between the U.K and U.S. to become financially independent of the crown.

Sky News tweeted Saturday about news of the reported family meeting, saying it was meant to help find “solutions” to help ease the tension of their departure.

“The Queen has called a family meeting to thrash out solutions to Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back as senior royals,” the outlet said.

Sources told People magazine that the high-level meeting was to “talk things through” after the Sussexes’ announcement. Meghan, who is currently in Canada, might call in for the meeting, per the publication.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said this week that their decision to step back came “after many months of reflection and internal discussions.”

“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the couple said in an Instagram post on Wednesday. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”

“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honor our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they said. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

Meghan and Harry’s adventure will make them rich beyond their dreams

Meghan – It’s been said that behind every great man is a great woman. In Prince Harry’s case, it’s three wealthy and media-savvy women.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced Wednesday they will “step back” from royal life, “work to become financially independent” and split their time between the U.K. and North America. Free from the ribbon-cutting duties of royal life, they’re on the brink of becoming a new kind of global-media power couple. Their Instagram FB, -0.16% account already has 10.2 million followers.

The couple receives income from Prince Charles, but they have vowed to become “financially independent.” Prince Harry owes his fortune to three famous women: his mother, the late Princess Diana; his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who helped bring the monarchy into the 21st Century, and his wife, Meghan Markle, an American-born self-made former actress.

Prince Harry is friends with former U.S. president Barack Obama, and will consider adopting the Obamas’ post-White House career model, some royal observers say. Barack and Michelle Obama reportedly signed an eight-figure deal with Netflix NFLX, -2.29%  to produce high-brow historical, biographical and social-justice programming with their company, Higher Ground Productions.

Netflix would give the Sussexes a platform of 158 million paid subscribers and certainly be a coup for the streaming service, which won critical praise for its series, “The Crown,” chronicling the life of Queen Elizabeth. (Netflix was not immediately available for comment.) Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is another powerful friend of the couple and attended their May 2018 wedding.

Ashley Pearson, an American-born writer based in London who has been a royal commentator for two decades, said their powerful political and media connections will serve them well. She sees them leveraging their circle of boldfaced names: “Their kind of lifestyle costs a fortune. However, one of the reasons they broke off from the royals is, in part, because they want to build their own brand.”

Pearson alleges that Markle is behind their strategy to strike out on their own. “She would rather be a celebrity than a royal,” Pearson said. “She had no idea how unglamorous it really is to be a royal and, when she found out she would be a civil servant in a tiara she was, like, ‘No way.’” The couple unveiled a sleek, new website, which is not so different from the tone of Obama.org.
