More than 10 million people are set to blow £1.4billion in a make or break D-Day for the high street.

Stores have slashed prices to the bone in a bid to woo Christmas shoppers, and the race to get the best deals will start early as bargain hunters hit stores from 8am.

Retail analyst Andrew Fowkes, of SAS UK and Ireland, said: “Retailers have had a tough 2018. Christmas will be a crunch time.

“With Super Saturday this weekend, last-minute in-store purchases could be critical.”

Mr Fowkes said “continuing economic uncertainty” meant retailers had to “compete for the attention of today’s more discerning shoppers”.

Ex-Wickes DIY boss Bill Grimsey, who wrote a report on the future of the high street earlier this year, said: “My bet is this will be the worst one for bricks and mortar retailers ever.”
